Limitations

The Harder Foundation makes grants for environmental and conservation work by non-profit organizations that are qualified under Section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code as public charities.  We do not make grants to individuals or government agencies.  Moreover, the Foundation does not support the following:
  • Agriculture issues
  • Book, film, or video production
  • Capital construction projects
  • Environmental education
  • Fiscal agency arrangements
  • Land acquisition or trust projects
  • Legislative programs
  • Local land management or restoration efforts
  • National policy research
  • Transportation issues
  • Urban and suburban projects

The Foundation does not make grants to organizations that are currently operating with an IRS designation as a 509(a)(3) supporting organization.

The Foundation cannot designate any portion of its grants for use in influencing legislation (lobbying).

Foundation funds may never be used to support or oppose candidates for political office.

We will only fund specific species preservation projects for select indicator species, for example salmon and grizzly bears, whose protection will benefit important ecosystems.

Proposals for research will be considered only when they are in direct support of concrete, well-defined strategies that take advantage of a specific opportunity to address a pressing environmental problem.

Grants for Organized Collaborative Campaigns can only be made to 501 (c) 3 organizations serving as a fiscal sponsor for member organizations that also have 501 (c) 3 status.  Such fiscal sponsors are not precluded from applying for grants for their own work, independent of the Collaborative Campaign.
